This is truly a car which needs no introduction.  A car which personifies the “if you have to ask…” price point.  A car which stands above all other classics in style and notoriety.  The Ferrari 365GTS/4 is simply the greatest open car the company has ever produced, and this 21,000 ORIGINAL mile example is perfect in every way, and is Ferrari Classiche Certified to prove it.  This is the ultimate collector Spyder.

S/N 16857, the 92nd of only 122 factory built Daytona Spyders, started its American tour of duty at east coast importer Chinetti Garthwaite Imports of Greenwich, CT, in October of 1973.  Taken home by its first owner, Mr. Ben Bryant of Cleveland, Ohio, the car remained in his care for the first 13,000 miles before handing in the gently used and well cared for car.  The car was restored to Platinum level in the late 1980s by Mike Sheehan’s European Auto Restoration, where the color was changed from its original hue, Blu Dino metallizzato, to its current classic Rosso Corsa.  The car looked good, but with the increase in restoration standards was redone again in the very late 1990s by Wayne Obry of Motion Products.  The car was correct (and beautiful) enough to rightfully take home Best-in-Class at Cavallino.

Taken to a bare shell and completely rebuilt, 16857 was stripped of all coatings and taken apart bolt-for-bolt.  Its body massaged, its chrome plated to perfection, its lights and lenses replaced with NOS parts, the shell looks the part of a world-class car…which it is.  The flowing lines combine to form one of Pininfarina’s best.  The gorgeous Borrani wires, 15x8 front and 15x9 rear, hold correct Michelin XWX 215/70/15 tires.  The convertible top is as perfect as the rest of the car. If you’re looking to attend the most prestigious shows and gatherings on the planet you might as well come with the proper automotive suit.

The interior was refitted with all new upholstery in its original tan and black leather color scheme. The dash was completely disassembled and restored as a subassembly with restored, perfect gauges and a new suede black top.  The door panels are new, hosting the grilles and art deco-style door latches beautifully.  Ferrari figured out by this time that people would want their cars, but they would pay substantial premiums if they were works of art.  The fresh carpeting, the perfect center console and the seat which are so popular that Ferrari still offers the style today are perfect.  This is a 100 point, show winning interior.

Open the hood and reveal the 4.4 litre V12 engine in its full, restored glory.  Perfect wrinkle finished parts from the cam covers to the air cleaner (to the rear view mirror mount and steering column inside) are done to better-than-factory standards.  The Ate brake system, the Magnetti Marelli ignition and the FIAMM horns are delivery fresh in operation and appearance.  Likewise underneath, every suspension or trim part has been re-plated or re-coated. All mechanicals, from the engine to the gearbox to the brakes to the suspension and all other moving parts were refurbished, correctly finished and reinstalled.  Freshened again by Autosprint Ltd. in 2006 the car was thoroughly checked out and cleared for further duty.

For a vintage car of any marque this car’s accessories are incredible.  We have the original Factory supplied leather book pouch, owner’s handbook, USA supplement handbook, warranty card, warranty service book, delivery card and the Consumer Information booklet. We also have both the factory supplied “briefcase” tool kit and the original factory supplied leather tool roll kit with all tools, the original leather jack bag and jack.  Last but certainly not least is the full, $5000 Ferrari Classiche program inspection.  The report lists only good news--the body, engine, transaxle and all other major parts are original, unmodified and undamaged.  When you’re looking at one of the most exclusive cars in the world it’s comforting to know Ferrari examined the car top to bottom.

The generally accepted total number of Daytonas from the Ferrari club historians is 1,406 over the life of the model. This figure includes 158 right-hand-drive coupes, 122 factory-made Spiders (of which 7 are right hand drive) converted by Scaglietti ---the Daytona body builder-- from the Coupe to the Spider for the factory and 15 competition cars in three series with modified lightweight bodies and in various degrees of engine tune.  Obviously 1,406 cars does not count as common, while 122 factory build Spyders certainly are rare cars.  With its original drivetrain and body, complete paperwork, true #1 condition and its status atop the sports car world S/N 16857 is one of the world’s greatest collector cars.
