Think classic sports cars and you have to think Ferrari.  Think Ferrari road cars and you’ll come up with one of the most iconic and easily recognizable classic Ferraris of all time, the 275/GTB.  This blue chip among blue chips is lightweight, powerful, handles fantastically, drives extremely well, is accepted to every concours on the planet and is flat out gorgeous.  You simply can’t argue with credentials like that.  From the bright Rosso paint to the classic Borrani wheels to the beautiful black interior this low mileage, numbers matching example has plenty to offer the serious collector who enjoys driving their classics.

During the late sixties, Ferraris road-oriented Berlinettas split in terms of design from their race cars. After the 250 short wheelbase Berlinetta, the dual purpose road / race Ferrari seemed gone. This new distinction motivated Ferrari to manufacture more civil road cars having impressive specifications, and the first example of this new trend was the 275 GTB.  Debuting in October 1964 at the Paris Salon, the Pininfarina designed and Scaglietti built 275 GTB was based on the 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso and the 250 GTO. The fastback coupe of the series, this version was meant for driving on the road and at the track. Being light, powerful and strikingly beautiful, the 275 was a very successful car for Ferrari.  It sold well (by Ferrari standards,) with around 1000 examples made and sold worldwide, and, as an afterthought, scored victories in endurance racing after the 250 LM was denied homologation.

This car, chassis 6899, retains its original engine up front, with its stamping visible on the passenger side of the block.  It was treated to a rebuild and refresh in 2007 with an eye towards driving reliability.  No corner shop was used--the car went to the Ferrari experts at Motion Products in Neenah, WI.  Approximately $17,000 was spent reconditioning the fuel system from the fuel bladder to the lines to the pump, rebuilding the carburetors, rebuilding the transaxle, replacing the clutch, rebuilding the steering box and front suspension, rebuilding the halfshafts, fabricating an exhaust system, restoring the cooling system and treating the engine to new bearings, seals and a top end rebuild.  Altogether this comprehensive service insures years of driving pleasure, knowing that competent hands have gone through the mechanicals.

Outside, the all-original steel body is bright red, with just a tint more orange than the 1980’s Rosso Corsa cars we have.  It’s a very appealing color and fitting to the car’s lines.  The original headlight covers are in excellent condition, as is the front grille.  The bumpers are the originals, and shine very well.  The glass is all original.  The 6" wide Borrani wheels hold excellent 205VR14 Michelin tires--there is no other look for a classic Ferrari.

Inside you’ll find a nearly untouched interior from the teak dash to the parcel shelf behind the seats.  The original wood wheel is in your hands while the original shifter, lean and lithe, falls to your right hand.  A newer carpet set is on the floor while the original headliner and visor set is above your head.  In a nod to its European heritage the previous owner replaced the speedometer face with a metric unit, though we have the original on the side, and the odometer (with its 77,000 miles) still reads true.  The door handles, dash, door panels and more are the originals, and everything works as it should.  The low-slung buckets hold you much better than they’d appear to, and the visibility out is very good.  This is a driver’s car, and you know it as soon as you sit inside and close the door.

Underneath you’ll see the original undercoating over extremely solid, clean floors.  This is a relatively untouched car, and what’s there is what you want to see.  Cars which have never been apart drive differently, and this one’s no exception:  It will be hard for you to find a better mannered 275 at any price.

Clean and original, untouched yet in mechanically superior condition this Ferrari is not only a necessary piece for your vintage collection but a fantastic driver to take out and enjoy on nice days.  You can only stare at so many classics before the itch to exercise one takes over, and this car serves its dual purpose role with aplomb.
