Thirty four. That’s the total number of 1965 GT350 R model factory racers bolted together by Shelby American. Assuming you don’t have an extra mid six figures laying around (and actually drive around) we’ve got the next best thing--this stunning recreation with just as much attitude and far more power and performance than the original!
Where to start? Twist the key and you’ll know where…built using nothing but the best that’s an A351 Ford Racing block filled with nothing but the best parts and measuring out to 408ci. Start out with an Eagle forged crank, Eagle H beam rods and JE 11.5:1 pistons for a rotating assembly. There’s a .640 lift billet solid roller cam in the valley, a Canton oil pan underneath and more. The short block alone was more than $13,000! Topping off the assembly are a pair of Edelbrock Victor Jr. heads, ported to the tune of 330cfm on the intake side. The heads are fed by a Victor 351 intake, ported and matched to the heads, flowing over 340dfm per runner. A Pro Systems Stage 3 carb sits on top, designed especially for the motor beneath it. Spark’s handled by an MSD 6AL box, coil and distributor, and you know the motor means business as there’s a 7000RPM pill in the box! Cooling duties are the part of a fat aluminum radiator and high flow water pump, the latter augmented with March pulleys and brackets. Fuel is handled by a full Mallory fuel system from the pump to the regulator to the filter.
Power output is around 600HP--far more than Shelby’s boys had back in the day. Hooker Super Comps feed a 3” exhaust with Magnaflows and side exit tips. You won’t miss this beast coming or going!
Visually you won’t get lost in the crowd, either. An original Wimbledon White car, the body got all of the R trickery. The deep front valance, the fastback scoop deletes, the Lexan rear window (the CORRECT type which allows airflow out of the car,) the stripes and more all speak to tradition. The big Coddington wheels wearing Pirelli tires and the Wilwood brakes with CNC dual master cylinders with adjustable brake bias behind them go well past what worked in 1965, though. PZero tires, 225/45/17 all around, work wonders for grip while the four piston binders bring the car to a quick and sure halt. Lucas-type headlights and mirrors complete the makeover in high style.
Inside you’ve got a pair of buckets which go light years past the originals. Procar leatherette seats hold you in the turns and get with the RJS harnesses and the four point rollbar to keep you safe. Auto Meter gauges are everywhere from the custom dash panel to the oval pod on the dash. Cosmetics are taken care of by all new chrome, new carpeting, new door panels and a new dash pad. The shifter next to you looks OE stock but moving it through the gears makes it apparent it’s connected to a TREMEC five speed box below. Strap in, check the vitals, grab on to the wood and aluminum wheel (with Cobra center cap, natch) and dump the hydraulically actuated clutch--you know you want to!
Born and shipped locally to San Jose this California sweetheart is just as clean underneath. Blacked-out floors are easy to clean after track days, all new and rebuilt suspension components front and rear send the car where you point it and the heavy duty 9” rear out back s built to take the abuse. You COULD build your own, but not to this level, for this price!
Shelby’s Mustangs are known worldwide for their performance and heritage. This stunningly fast, beautifully done recreation does the name proud while being as track ready as the originals!
