A true Challenger T/A, in Panther
Pink, with its original build sheet, original drivetrain and a white top and interior…this
nearly perfect #1 example is a bright star amongst marquee muscle cars. All original sheetmetal, a full rotisserie
restoration and as many original and NOS parts as could be found make this one
of the most desirable T/A’s in existence. Here’s
the original build sheet decoded: FM3
Panther Pink V1W White
vinyl top H6XW White
bucket seats V6H Black
T/A longitudinal stripes A53 Trans
Am package B42 T/A
Front power disc brakes w/11” rear drums F08
“Police” special engine (340 six pack) G32
Painted racing style passenger side mirror G34
Painted racing style driver side remote mirror J45 Hood
pins J46
Locking gas cap J54 Sport
hood (coded on all T/A cars in addition to code N94) J55
Undercoating J78 Front
spoiler J82
Ducktail spoiler (T/A mandatory) M21 Drip
rail moldings M83 Rear
bumper guards N44 T/A
side exhaust N94
Fiberglass fresh air hood R11 AM
radio S13 Heavy
duty suspension S31/S41
Front and rear sway bars S77 Power
steering U01
E60x15 front, G60x15 rear Polyglas white letter tires W34
Collapsible spare tire E55 340HP
engine D32 HD
Torqueflite automatic D57 3.91
Rear axle, D91 Sure Grip Panther Pink isn’t quite as “neon”
as most think, and this car’s sprayed right. The all original body is
outstanding and the paint is perfectly flat and glossy. Both bumpers were
treated to a high dollar re-chroming, as were the taillight bezels. The
taillights, side markers and front parking lights are all close to perfect. The
grille, correct in R/T textured black but with the standard Challenger badge, received
a $2600 restoration and is better than any NOS piece you’ll find. The hood is
painted with the correct and perfectly applied Organisol textured paint and
holds the proper N94-only washer squirters and a very cool Dixco tach. Reveal
and drip moldings are highly polished, both splash pans are arrow straight and
the stripes, door handles and badges are new and correct. Refinished 15” steel
wheels with new trim rings and “dog dish” center caps host new E60 front and
G60 Polyglas tires. The glass is excellent, and the windshield has the pre
delivery exhaust sticker applied. The ducktail spoiler is the original, and the
blackout decal underneath is applied correctly. The vinyl top is even NOS: From any angle or distance the car’s a real
attention grabber, and it’s done right. The floor pans are as shiny as the
topside, with a load of clearcocat, while the rocker panels have their correct blackout
treatment. Yes, this car should be undercoated, but with sheetmetal this clean
it would be a shame to hide it. New
stainless fuel lines and a new fuel tank and sending unit keep new brake lines
and hoses and parking brake cables company. New front end components compliment
the original HD suspension with the original front and rear sway bars and power
steering box. A new exhaust system runs from the proper original exhaust
manifolds to date coded correct T/A mufflers and tips. Proper paint markings
dot both front and rear suspensions. The
finishes are concours quality rather OE, making sure the bare metal parts will
look as fresh in 20 years as they do today. Wheelwell undercoating is applied
correctly. This is a show car, overdone
by factory standards, and it’s built to stay that way. Lift the fiberglass hood and
examine the original, numbers matching mill in its natural environment. That’s
the correct 974 radiator topped with a correct cap and overflow tubing
connected via reproduction hoses to the engine, carrying coolant with
reproduction heater hoses. The original air cleaner assembly with a brand new
and correct air filter element tops the original Holleys (4789, 4790 and 4792
from front-to-rear) and their original linkage with a new reproduction choke
and idle solenoid. Date coded wires, a date coded fuel filter and a date coded
voltage regulator and ballast resistor keep the mill company. A new Antique
Auto Battery yellow top group 24 battery connects up with new battery cables providing
cranking power while a rebuilt master cylinder and brake booster keep the
restored wiper motor company on the firewall. The motor fires up and runs
quietly and smoothly, the six pack opens as it should and the original
numbers-correct transmission shifts crisply. The car drives as nicely as it
looks. A quick examination of the trunk
reveals a new mat over a shiny, perfect floor, appropriately applied seam
sealer, the correct jack and the original, date coded space saver spare setup.
It’s both correct and attractive, and that isn’t an easy tire to find. Inside, you’ll sit on very
comfortable restored seats with new seat foams. The dash pad is an excellent
reproduction of the ’70-only piece with the embossed Challenger nameplate and
faux stitching. The door panels are excellent, as are the armrest pads. The
headliner is NOS while the Auto Custom Carpet carpeting is new. The ’70-only AM radio is in place, the gauges
are crisply white, the vent cables are new as are the door handles and lock
levers. The steering wheel is a mint original with no cracks and excellent
grain. Few Challengers turn heads as
T/A’s do, and few T/A’s turn heads like those in Panther Pink. The color combnation
is hard to find with only 28 made, and it's unique and well balanced on this car with its black hood and side stripes
playing off the white top and interior, and it looks fantastic. The car is
rare, the build sheet and original drivetrain and sheetmetal are huge plusses
and the restoration is top shelf. This is THE centerpiece of any E body, Mopar,
muscle or Trans Am collection. |
